Companies that hire older workers

I will work very hard to compile a list of companies that hire workers over 50. https://www.glassdoor.com/blog/companies-hiring-over-50/

Older workers are well adjusted and still have something to prove.
The myth is that older people are slow, tired and lack skills needed
to compete.
However the older generation came up with excellent work ethic, after all our parents were the greatest generation after WWII and we were the generation that bridged the gap between the old way of thinking and a new attitude wild and adventurous.

As we go along i will look for ways for all of us to make some extra cash in the golden years, because as I have found out the road to retirement can be full of pitfalls that we didn't see coming.

News you can use

Getting older presents many new challenges, and guess what i'm right there with you.  I'll be 72 in November and at times it's a slippery slope.

I will try and post any useful information regarding ways to save money along with ways for seniors to earn extra money.  It seems like just when you think you've got everything figured out, everything changes.

So hang in there and we can chart a course that works for all of us.

I've lost my job, now what?

Well it happened, our company was taken over by new owners who in their infinite wisdom started cutting costs. Keep in mind neither of the two new owners know nothing about the nuts and bolts of the business. I was working approx 55 hrs per week after my neighbor and owner passed away a year ago Easter. There were two people in the office, one of them being me, who kept the ship afloat and actually increased the profits of the business. The owners wife had no knowledge of the business or it's inner workings. So she contacted a business broker and sold it. My dilemma is I just turned 71 years old. I don't feel any different than I did at 30 or 40 and I still have the drive and desire to become a productive working stiff. As I look at all my accomplishments from the inside, I see a pretty talented guy who has a lot to offer. But as I apply for different positions, without saying it my age has become an obstacle that is very hard to overcome. What employers are missing is the work ethic of the boomer generation, we didn't set around playing video games, or starring mindlessly at a 3 x 5 inch lcd screen on a cell phone. Our parents were for the most part survivors of the depression era in some form and worked very hard for everything they had, which in turn trickled down to us in the fact that if we wanted anything meaningful we had to go out and get it ourselves. I am the eternal optimist and feel that somehow someway I will land back on my feet and pick up where I left off.

Living longer means you need a larger stream of income

https://money.usnews.com/money/retirement/articles/2008/06/27/how-to-retire-on-a-shoestring With lifespans becoming longer and longer the fact is people are starting to outlive their income streams. I know you all thought you were going to retire on a desert island and set back and relax. The fact is older workers are an outstanding source for employers. We grew up in a different era where if we wanted something for the most part we had to go out and earn it. I was the oldest of three and if I didn't go get it, it wasn't going to come my way. Work ethic, dedication and hard work were and are some of the founding principles that boomers lived by and worked by. The other positive of working is it gives you a sense of purpose, instead of being put on the shelf like an old pair of shoes, it gives you a reason to get up every morning and accomplish the task at hand.

The age of multi-careers

Back in the day kids graduated from high school went to work at the local factory and worked there until they retired. Those days are nothing but a pipe dream now. Not only does the type of jobs change rapidly, but companies come and go like the wind. Companies you remember are sucked up by big conglomerates and changed into something else or done away with all together. Even older workers are now faced with the problem of becoming obsolete because of outdated skills or jobs that no longer exist. You have to become like a chameleon and be ready to change careers and jobs rather quickly. Education is the key, and even that is not always enough. Ongoing job training and new opportunities will be the key. Don't be left in the dust, become proactive, pro education and proficient.

Experience matters

As I become older I realize that people of my generation, the boomers, are hard working, no nonsense source of dedicated workers. We grew up in an era that didn't have all the distraction of today. Our parents were from a different era and we had to go out and get anything we wanted or desired. There were no kids walking around with their faces plastered against a cell phone screen, or glued to a couch or chair playing video games for hours upon end. I was the oldest of three and the only way I got the things I really wanted or needed was to get a job and earn the money to buy them. Work ethic for the most part is impeccable and dedication unquestioned. Employers would do well to dip into this large area of knowledge and use the boomer generation to help shape the direction for the next groups coming along.
