With lifespans becoming longer and longer the fact is people are starting to outlive their income streams. I know you all thought you were going to retire on a desert island and set back and relax.
The fact is older workers are an outstanding source for employers. We grew up in a different era where if we wanted something for the most part we had to go out and earn it. I was the oldest of three and if I didn't go get it, it wasn't going to come my way. Work ethic, dedication and hard work were and are some of the founding principles that boomers lived by and worked by.
The other positive of working is it gives you a sense of purpose, instead of being put on the shelf like an old pair of shoes, it gives you a reason to get up every morning and accomplish the task at hand.

Everyone needs a helping hand along the way. Especially our senior citizens.

The age of multi-careers
Back in the day kids graduated from high school went to work at the local factory and worked there until they retired. Those days are nothing but a pipe dream now. Not only does the type of jobs change rapidly, but companies come and go like the wind. Companies you remember are sucked up by big conglomerates and changed into something else or done away with all together.
Even older workers are now faced with the problem of becoming obsolete because of outdated skills or jobs that no longer exist. You have to become like a chameleon and be ready to change careers and jobs rather quickly.
Education is the key, and even that is not always enough. Ongoing job training and new opportunities will be the key. Don't be left in the dust, become proactive, pro education and proficient.
Experience matters
As I become older I realize that people of my generation, the boomers, are hard working, no nonsense source of dedicated workers. We grew up in an era that didn't have all the distraction of today. Our parents were from a different era and we had to go out and get anything we wanted or desired. There were no kids walking around with their faces plastered against a cell phone screen, or glued to a couch or chair playing video games for hours upon end.
I was the oldest of three and the only way I got the things I really wanted or needed was to get a job and earn the money to buy them. Work ethic for the most part is impeccable and dedication unquestioned.
Employers would do well to dip into this large area of knowledge and use the boomer generation to help shape the direction for the next groups coming along.

Retirement not all it's cracked up to be?
I've been retired now since 2010 officially. The problem is unless you have a private bank with a vault, it can be a roller coaster ride.
I was fortunate to recover from congestive heart failure back a couple of decades ago, which allowed me to go back to work to help offset the tremendous medical bills and other bills that fell behind in my absence from the workforce.
Now once again, things have hit choppy waters as the company I worked for the last eight years just changed ownership due to my neighbor passing away a year ago Easter. And of course with any new regime, nothing remains the same the people become expendable and let go. So was my plight just two weeks ago.
As with other baby boomers I remain resilient and hopeful for the future
